Acupuncture Treatment in London

It is thought that acupuncture began as a concept in China and has been practiced for thousands of years. The underlying philosophy is that the healthy functioning of the body is governed by the flow of energy or Qi (often pronounced Chi), through a system of channels under the skin. When this flow of Qi is compromised, illness may occur. By inserting fine needles at various points along these channels, the body’s balance can be restored and the illness resolved.

The flow of Qi can be disrupted in many ways: physical trauma, emotional upset, poor diet and overwork are all common examples. At Waterloo Body Station, our practitioner investigates the underlying causes of problems and how these have affected the body, and then select the most appropriate treatment for each individual. Treating everyone as an individual is a core principle of acupuncture and is vital to assisting the body to rebalance itself successfully.

What to expect:

A typical treatment is 60 minutes long. The first treatment is always a consultation treatment and needs to be longer. It includes an in depth consultation about your health and lifestyle followed by diagnostic testing then treatment.

Our practitioners offer the recommended consultation is 70 - 80 minutes long and includes a full diagnostic and a complete treatment (best for more complicated conditions). Shorter options of 60 minute consultations are available which includes a full diagnostic and a short tester treatment. This is recommended for simpler conditions or as a way of seeing how well the condition will respond to acupuncture.

During an Acupuncture treatment the client is fully clothed except for shoes and socks, and perhaps trousers if they cannot be rolled up to the knee.

You will then lie comfortably on a treatment table.

Typically, the acupuncturist will use 6-12 needles during the treatment. The number of needles used does not correspond with the intensity of the treatment. It is the precise placement of the needles that is important.

Upon insertion, the client may feel a slight sting, prick or scratch. Once the needle is inserted, there should be no pain. You should feel comfortable during the treatment. If you experience pain, numbness, or discomfort, notify your practitioner immediately.

Acupuncture can be combined with other techniques such as moxibustion, cupping, massage or physiotherapy.
